Webcomic Book Club Full Reviews
of White Ninja by Scott Bevan and Kent Earle

I can stomach most webcomics, even when I don't like them. But "White Ninja" is one of the few that I couldn't read all the way through. Barely 200 comics, and I had to stop at least 4 times to stop myself from yelling at the screen.

Art: Simplistic. There's no backgrounds at all, and it's only a step above stick figure work. Not all that impressive, but since the art hasn't changed since the first comic, I suspect that it's meant to be simple, so I gave it a little leeway.

Story: Not applicable. Each comic is its own little plot, so story doesn't mean much for "White Ninja".

Characters: Barely applicable. Most of the people who appear in the comic are random strangers who, for that one comic, are known by White Ninja or do something for the punchline. White Ninja himself is the only constant, and the only firm impression I have of him is "dangerous lunatic".

Writing: I could tolerate the art. I have nothing against gag-a-day strips, though I want them to feature one character. So why does "White Ninja" make me react so violently?

Well, it's because comedy is a balancing act. It comes from tragedy, which is why we'll laugh when we see someone get cut down with a witty quip. But it's not that hard for a quip to become a cut, and then it becomes cruel instead of funny. That's where "White Ninja" ends up; the humor tips too far, and becomes cruelty instead, because we don't really know who White Ninja is abusing or why. He's just doing it to try and amuse us, so it doesn't work. And when it's not trying to be funny through pain, it's completely random, so it just falls on its face.

Overall: Not good. Don't read "White Ninja" more than once, if that much. 1 out of 10.

White Ninja... one of the most random webcomics out there, without any cohesive story, narrative or characters and a grade-school level art style. These comics seem like they were done in about ten minutes in a fit of pot combined with ADD.

And I like it.

One thing that must be considered when reading this comic is that there is no higher artistic motive involved in the making or reading of these comics. at least one of the authors actually does have ADD, and they're not trying to make anything deep here. It's amazing then that these guys can crank out a good number of very funny jokes simply through cognitave dissonance!

The art style is very simple, showing the lowest level of detail necessary in the characters, objects and backgrounds. Some things are so poorly-defined that they need labels to be identified. White Ninja's physiology is even pretty vague. He has no fingers or toes; his belt is te only defining piece of clothing he has; it's even hard to tell how his suit works, as he seems to have an opening for his eyes, but his mouth seems to be part of the suit itself. Other characters have varying levels of detail, sometimes looking like just an everyday joe, other times having a surprisingly realistic look to them. This seems to indicate that the artist can draw better, he just doesn't want to.

As for the jokes, the randomness of the strip makes it so it's hard to determine what the punchline is going to be. The strips themselves can be read in less than five seconds, so any humor has be incredibly to the point. Sometimes the humor comes from an unexpected turn in conversation. Other times the humor is physical. More often it's simply the bizarreness of the whole situation. Some times the comics are just... there. There are rare instances, though, when a strip just is funny on so many levels while being incredibly simple. This comic made me laugh harder than any other, just because it has several layers of real-world irony in it and it's still unexpected.

Then again, I laugh at almost anything strange, so my opinion of this might be a little biased.

There's also the question of White Ninja himself. He does not really have any defined character, personality or background. Sometimes he's the voice of reason; sometimes he's mind-numbingly stupid; sometimes he's incredibly violent; sometimes he's just inconsiderate. It's not even clear that he's a ninja, as he's not always a mammal and while he has gotten himself into a few scrapes, he doesn't fight all the time. He has flipped out and killed people, but it doesn't seem to be his purpose. He clearly does not have the Real Ultimate Power. In one comic, the roles of the office worker and White Ninja could easily be reversed and it would still be just as funny.

In conclusion, White Ninja is easy to read and often funny simply due to all of the strange stuff that happens. You won't feel particularly rewarded for reading through it, but you might pick up on a few things to say the next time you get some drive-thru.

White ninja is about the most childish unintelligent SCUM to grace this earth. I guarantee you that any Satire is in the fact that this is even allowed to be published. The brain damaged imbisiles that actually enjoy this 'comic'. That is another thing. What an insult to the word 'comic' which provides storylines, characters, etc..this provides none of that.

i would say the only thing this 'strip' is good for is to put on toilet paper so it can get the proper treatment that this 'comic' deserves.

White Ninja has the X factor that comic creators strive for.

There is something wonderfully innocent and fresh about White Ninja, it never tries too hard, and the creators don't seem to shy away from experimenting.

I actually found this comic one day and read through the entire thing; the entire time I was laughing so hard I could barely see. The sheer morbidity of some of the comics just makes it that much funnier.

White Ninja is hilariously random, morbid, and fantastic. Go! Read! Now!

Okay, when it says "White Ninja comics are not for the weak of mind. They are a brilliant satirical commentary on controversial worldly issues"
That is a JOKE. You are truly dense if you can't even get that.

That said, I love White Ninja. But please, don't trot out the tired argument 'If you don't like it you just aren't smart enough to get it.'

Yes as Ender and Kit have said, the writer said, and i quote "not for the weak of mind. They are a brilliant satirical commentary on controversial worldly issues" so grow a brain stem or a ball sack and tough it out.

if you didnt catch one of the comics of white ninja it said that these comics were not for the dumb unsifisticated people, they are for the people that think out side the box. you benor, cobra, and meataxe obviously do not. so how about not trying to ruin it for everyone else!
Review by Ender Tue Mar 15 2005 10:45 PM

White Ninja is definitely the funniest thing to grace the planet. What Benor clearly doesn't understand is that the hilarity is in the obvious cruelness, and that there is a consistent inconsistency in the supporting characters. It's surrealist, for God's sake! However, the warning is clear:

"White Ninja Comics are not for the weak of mind."

If you can't handle the heat, step away from the funniness...

This comic is hilarious! I love the abstractidness of it (is that even a word?) and just how nuts white ninja can be sometimes, another favourite of mine is Toothpastefordinner.com, (which is where I got the link for white ninja) so you can see that I am a deeply disturbed and easily amused person, which is fun!!

Boring - it takes 2 people to do this? Funny in a non-funny kinda way.

MY REVIEW OF WHITE NINJA:

Benor is an idiot.

Toonami gives it an 8 out of 10.
